How is the best female footballer not at the World Cup?

Imagine you sit down to watch the World Cup, Argentina vs Portugal are scheduled to play, however there is something wrong, there is no sign of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo because they have taken a stance not to feature in the biggest sporting competition on the planet. It is impossible to imagine, however, over in the women’s game that is exactly what the first female Ballon D’or winner has done.

Hegerberg is from Norway, a country renowned for its progressive nature, so what does Hegerberg mean when she says “one day the men in suits will understand” when responding to questions about her not taking part with the national team. When she originally stepped away from international football it was a bold move to increase equality in football in her home country. She wanted male and female players to be paid the same wage when representing Norway, she succeeded with this and as of 2017 the male and female players earn the same amount of money, around £600,000. After these changes you would expect Hegerberg to take up a role as the main player for her country and hopefully lead them to World Cup glory, however, Ada Hegerberg has still decided to stay away from the national team set up.

Hegerberg is of course the poster child of the women’s game, however she does not currently give a very compelling points as to why she still will not play at an international level other than saying she feels “stifled” when part of the national team. Which leaves me to question whether it is more of a personal issue for her and is it doing more harm than good not having the best female player on the planet at the women’s World Cup finals.
